The Auckland Youth Choir has a strong presence in the community and is regularly in demand for Civic, Corporate and Professional events. The choir is a major part of the youth music scene in Auckland and the choir gained an international reputation under the conductorship of Terence Maskell when it won music competitions in Sydney and Melbourne in 1993 and 1994 respectively. Terence was Musical Director for 9 years until he moved on in 2001 to establish the now highly respected Graduate Choir. Subsequent conductors have been Stuart Weightman, Claire Caldwell, Iain Tetley, Rachel Young, Rostislava (Ronnie) Pankova-Karadjov. Under its current director Lachlan Craig - the choir has enjoyed immense growth in numbers and momentum. The choir was set up in 1984 because it was felt there was a need for such a choir to provide choral training at a time when it was not provided in all schools, and to bridge the gap between school-leaving age and the more adult choirs. The current choir is designed for high school students, tertiary students and young professionals who all want to continue singing.
