Santiago High School Madrigals & Santiago High School Treble Ensemble

The Santiago High School Madrigals, founded in 1997, is a mixed choir of 35 select singers. The group is comprised of seniors, juniors, and sophomores.  The Madrigals are one of three fine choirs at Santiago High School. The Madrigals have participated in several local University Invitationals including festivals at Biola University, Chapman University, Cal State Fullerton, University of Southern California, and Fullerton College. In 2011, the group placed second in the prestigious Golden State choral competition. The choir has participated in numerous Heritage Festivals and Heritage Festivals of Gold, with opportunities to sing at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Davies Hall in San Francisco, Orchestra Hall in Chicago and Riverside Church in New York. Additionally, the Madrigals traveled to New York in 2012 and performed in Carnegie Hall as a featured choir. Madrigals were honored to be at the first CMEA State Choral Festival in 2018 singing in the beautiful Musco Center of the Arts at Chapman University. Santiago Madrigals are pleased to be a Carnegie Hall once again.

The Santiago High School Treble Ensemble is a select choir of 33 female voices. The advanced group is comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors. Treble Ensemble is one of three fine choral groups at Santiago. The girls’ chorus has performed at local festivals such as the Redlands University and the University of Southern California Women’s Festivals. The choir has participated in numerous Heritage Festivals and Heritage Festivals of Gold, with opportunities to sing at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Davies Hall in San Francisco, Orchestra Hall in Chicago and Riverside Church in New York. In 2012 the Ensemble traveled to New York and performed in Carnegie Hall as a featured choir. In addition, the group was invited to sing at Lincoln Center as part of a mass choir. Treble Ensemble is honored to be performing in Carnegie Hall once again.

Karen Garrett earned her BA in vocal performance at California University East Bay and her Masters in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California. Mrs. Garrett served on the state board of the American Choral Directors Association as Repertoire and Standards Chairman for Women's Choirs from 2005-2009. Mrs. Garrett was voted Teacher of the Year for the Corona/Norco School District for the year 2006-2007. She served as president of the Southern California Vocal Association from 2016-2018 and served as a session clinician for sight-singing and the state music education standards at CMEA, SCVA and ACDA conferences. In 2020 she was voted Choral Director of the Year for the state of California by the California Choral Directors Associated. Mrs. Garrett teaches at Santiago High School in Corona and teaches at California Baptist University conducting the Advanced Women's Choir and teaching Music Education classes.

East Brunswick High School has one of the most comprehensive performing arts programs in New Jersey. The orchestra program currently boasts 170 members in grades 10-12, and rehearse in 5 different orchestras. Members of the orchestra have the opportunity to perform in world-class concert halls around the United States. The East Brunswick High School Orchestra has been invited to perform at the NJMEA State Conference, the NAfME All-Eastern Division Conference, as well as the Midwest Clinic, the foremost International Band and Orchestra Conference in the world. In addition to a rigorous performing schedule, students in the program are consistently recognized as members of region, all state, all eastern, and all national orchestras. 

Dr. Arvin Gopal has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral violist throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas. His performances have been broadcast on the public radios of the United States, Canada, China and Brazil. For two years, he served as assistant principal viola of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Dr. Gopal holds a MM and DMA in viola performance from the University of Maryland, where the topic of his dissertation was The Distinctive Voice of Paul Hindemith through the viola. His principal teachers have included Daniel Foster, principal violist of the National Symphony Orchestra, and Michael Tree, violist of the Guarneri Quartet. Dr. Gopal graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance. Dr. Gopal served for three years as principal violist of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, in addition to performing with the National, New Jersey and Richmond Symphony Orchestras. As an educator, ensembles of Dr. Gopal have performed at major concert venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kimmel Center, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Lincoln Center, and have consistently received superior ratings at festivals and competitions. Dr. Gopal is currently the orchestra director at East Brunswick High School. He has served as president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American String Teachers Association, is the high school orchestra division chair for the Central Jersey Music Educators Association and is a member of the orchestra procedures committee for the New Jersey Music Educators Association.
