Caleb Chapman
Caleb's vision and accomplishments have marked him as a rising star both domestically and internationally. As the President of Caleb Chapman Music, Caleb directs over 150 of Utah's most talented young musicians in eleven elite ensembles, including the Crescent Super Band, which has frequently been hailed as one of the best youth big bands in the world. In 2011, Caleb was named the "John LaPorta International Jazz Educator of the Year", one of the highest honors in music education. At age 37, he was by far the youngest to ever receive this honor.
Caleb was raised in Derry, New Hampshire - a long ways from his current home. As a youth, he was focused on sports and very disinterested in music until his mother sent him to a music camp his sixth grade year. While he had played saxophone in his school concert band, this was his first introduction to jazz and popular styles. He began teaching music lessons at age 15 and was named Associate Director of an 80-piece wind ensemble by the age of 16. He went on to win several awards as a saxophonist in high school and was awarded a music scholarship to study at Brigham Young University.
Caleb's bands have been featured at many of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals including North Sea (The Netherlands), Montreux (Switzerland), Vienne (France), Umbria (Italy), and Tuscany (Italy). Most recently, the Crescent Super Band was featured with jazz icon Toshiko Akiyoshi at the Telluride Jazz Festival. Caleb's bands have also performed with nearly 200 guest artists, including Grammy-winners Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, Peter Erskine, Kurt Elling, Gordon Goodwin, Wayne Bergeron, Dave Weckl, Nicholas Payton, Jeff Coffin, Eric Marienthal, Ernie Watts, and Bob Mintzer. They have also been featured with musicians from such recognizable bands as Journey, Dave Matthews Band, Steve Miller Band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Tower of Power, Genesis, the Saturday Night Live Band, and many others. Additionally, his bands have been featured on the Sirius XM "Real Jazz" Channel and released 8 full length albums on the Big Swing Face record label.
